PRETORIA – Following the appointment of Ms. Jeanette Chanda Makgolo as Commissioner General of the Botswana Unified Revenue Service (BURS), the African Tax Administration Forum (ATAF) has put together a fact file on her to celebrate her new role.

Botswana’s Ministry of Finance and Economic Development made the announcement at the beginning of August, saying Makgolo’s appointment will be for a period of five years.

The ministry expressed confidence in her abilities saying she possesses the requisite competencies to enhance the performance of BURS.

As South Africa celebrates Women’s Month, ATAF’s Executive Secretary, Mr Logan Wort, added his congratulatory voice to her appointment.

Ms. Makgolo’s qualifications, experience and expertise prove that she’s qualified for her new role, here’s what you might not know about her:

Ms. Makgolo holds a Bachelor of Commerce Degree from the University of Botswana and a post graduate Professional Training in Public Finance Management (Masters Equivalent) from the National Institute of Finance Management in India.

The Commissioner General is a seasoned public officer and a veteran accountant who has served the office of the Accountant General for over 30 years.

She helped develop Botswana’s Public Procurement Bill that is currently before Parliament, which resulted in the enactment of the first ever Financial Reporting Act that established the Botswana Accountancy Oversight Authority (BAOA); and the revised Botswana Institute of Accountants Act that established the Botswana Institute of Chartered Accountants (BICA) qualification.

Ms. Makgolo served in various boards, including Morupule Coal Mine Rehabilitation Trust Fund; Botswana Institute of Chartered Accountants Public Sector Committee; Botswana Unified Revenue Service Board; African Confederation of Cooperative Savings and Credit Association and the International Public Sector Accounting Standards Board.

“Ms Makgolo joins the revenue service at a critical time when the fiscal position of the country has deteriorated and new measures are required to transform the revenue service into a modern revenue authority capable of increasing collection of domestic revenues.” The ministry added.

Botswana is a long standing and active Member of ATAF. In addition to hosting the organisation’s General Assembly in 2018, BURS has been recipient of several technical assistance programmes from ATAF, specifically in the mining sector among others.

The appointment of the new CG puts an end to three years of interim service at the head of BURS. It is set to strengthen collaboration between ATAF and BURS even further.
